ASM-CHiMaD Materials Genome Camps
Olson group members volunteered in 2021 (virtually) and 2022 & 2023 (on MIT campus) to run 1-week camps funded by CHiMaD and organized by ASM International, CHiMaD, and MIT. The camps hosted 10-12 high school STEM teachers and taught them about the Materials Genome Initiative, CALPHAD, and the materials design process, including hands-on laboratory experience in fabricating and testing prototype samples of a self-healing “Frankensteel.” These camps were featured in this DMSE News Article in 2022 and in this DMSE News Article in 2023.

2023 SRG Annual Meeting
Researchers gathered at MIT to review progress in computational materials design research under a multi-institutional consortium underway since its founding at MIT in 1985. The 2-day meeting was followed by a 3-day short course on computational material design. Morning lectures by Prof. Olson on design methods were followed by afternoon laboratories featuring the new ICMD® design platform developed by QuesTek Innovations.
IAP Introduction to ThermoCalc Courses (Annually, 2020-2023)
Undergraduate and graduate students from the MIT community are invited yearly to a 4-day course featuring lectures on computational materials design, the Materials Genome Initiative, and CALPHAD. They are also trained in the use of ThermoCalc software. Many students who have taken this IAP course proceed to take Prof. Olson’s spring 3.041/3.321 Computational course, collaborate with the Olson research group, and/or use CALPHAD in their own current and future projects.
